Handling Conflicts
In all of the grades we discuss handling conflicts. We teach that conflict is going to happen. What you do about it makes a difference. Individuals make choices that have consequences. One of the first things we do is discuss perceptions and how people perceive things differently. We have them look at pictures
that can be interpreted different ways based on their perception to stimulate this discussion. When teaching about conflict, it is helpful to use the metaphor of a referee. If a referee were present during your conflict he or she would blow a whistle on you if you committed one of the following fouls:
The following strategies are helpful when handling conflicts. We spend time in class discussing them and role playing situations where they can be used effectively.

- Name calling
- Bossing
- Threats
- Hitting
- Pushing
- Blaming
- Not listening
- Bringing up past conflicts
- Making excuses
- Put-downs
- Not taking responsibility
